Starting a new search for any topic can be overwhelming, however, it really does not have to be! When searching the topic Women in Sport think of the different aspects of the subject: various sports, gender, and violence. Other places to find keywords are databases, articles, and your syllabus, look at the areas you will be studying, topics of discussion, and the themes themselves. When breaking the larger subject down it will be easier to focus your research and find the materials you are truly looking for. Please do not forget, when all else fails, ask the librarian.

Course Description: This is a course focusing on the social dimensions and the historical and cultural foundations of women and sport in our society. Emphasis will be placed on exploring the changing roles and opportunities in sports for women, as well as how past and current beliefs regarding gender, sexuality, and race and ethnicity shape the experiences of women in sports in our society.

Selected topics include: the history of physical education, activity and fitness for women in the United States, barriers/structural constraints facing women in sports, race and ethnicity, women's health issues, sexuality and homophobia, the role of journalism and the media, career opportunities for women, and the future of sports for women in society.
